Fly Fishing the Madison
Published in Paperback by The Lyons Press (01 June, 2002)
Authors: Craig Mathews and Gary LaFontaine
Average review score:

A distillation of decades of experience
Volume three in the oustanding Greycliff "River Books" series, Fly Fishing The Madison offers the aspiring angler a distillation of decades of experience, knowledge, and insight in this "user friendly" guide to fishing Montana's Madison river. Here is a wealth of information on the hatches, seasons, and reaches of the river, along with "tips, tricks & techniques" for unlocking the secrets of an surprisingly diverse river. The authors show how to fish the Madison with dry flies, nymphs, and streamers, as well as pointing out the right moments for each type of fly. Of special interest is Craig Mathews' contributions about fishing the Madison's two "stillwater" areas -- Hebgen Lake and Quake Lake. If you are planning an excursion to the Madison, begin by a thorough reading of Craig Mathews and Gary LaFontaine's Fly Fishing The Madison! Also very highly recommended for the angler's reference shelf are the other volumes in this outstanding series: Fly Fishing The Beaverkill; Fly Fishing The Henry's Fork; and Fly Fishing The Yellowstone In The Park.

Fly Patterns of Northern New Mexico
Published in Spiral-bound by University of New Mexico Press (04 May, 2000)
Authors: Karen Denison, William Orr, Craig Martin, and Bill Orr
Average review score:

Lives up to its billing
If you live in New Mexico or southern Colorado and fish or tie flies you will like this book. It catalogs unusal regional fly patterns and the waters to fish them. I, of course, haven't tied or fished all of the patterns in the book but its an enjoyable read. Because these flies are not going to be found in even some of the best fly shops in the region the recipes and tying instructions are worth the price. The instructions also include a variety of techniques that are not as well described in other fly tying manuals. The only negative I can think of is the lack of color pictures, but I have a good enough imagination not to need them. Besides I'm a sucker for books from the University of New Mexico Press.

A Timeless Guide for a Timeless Place
This Fodor's is on the smaller side, but so is the total land mass of the area being reviewed. It does an admirable job and is still a good guide even though a few years old now.

Outstanding survey of an exciting place
This book is the best overall history of the state that I have ever read. It is written for the casual reader and colors the many exciting events with vivid descriptors that leave the reader enchanted. Rarely is so much captured in so few pages. This was truely an entertaining read.

Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (January, 1983)
Authors: Frederic Martini and Grace J. Craig
Average review score:

Human Development is an excellent textbook.
Human Development is an excellent textbook, and one of the best textbooks I have ever used in my studies in Psychology. The author has laid out the chapters in chronological order from infancy to old age. Theories of development are clearly explained and charted. Many true-life examples of research and studies are scattered throughout the text, making theoretical material easy to comprehend. I would highly recommend this textbook to any instructor who is in search of high quality up-to-date material.

Fundamentals of United States Intellectual Property Law: Copyright, Patent, and Trademark
Published in Hardcover by Kluwer Law International (March, 1999)
Authors: Sheldon W. Halpern, Craig Allen Nard, and Kenneth L. Port
Average review score:

Excellent Study Aide and/or Quick Reference
While modeslty priced this book provides a good review of US intellectual property laws, including copyright, patent, and trademark law. While comprehensive treatment of even a single subject would require many volumes, this book does provide excellent coverage of US intellectual property laws.

I highly recommended this book for law students searching for a study aide (I have done just that for my Intro to IP class). I also highly recommend this book for attorneys not well versed in intellectual property who are looking for a comprehensive primer.

Becaues this book contains numerous citations it could also be very useful as a quick reference or deskbook for intellectual property practitioners and law professors.

Fuseki

Average review score:

Separating the Firmaments
When a new player first comes to the Go board what fascinates it the rich complexity of the tactical battles. Almost anything seems possible as players use tricks and carefully laid traps to resolve questions of life and death. Although Chess and Go will always be very different games, hand-to-hand fighting is where they are closest. For many players this will remain the arena they prefer to play in, and there is no question that a superb Go player must be a formidable tactician.

The beginnings of strategy in Go arise in the joseki; the opening pattern of play in the corners of the board where each player strives to get at least their fair share of the available territory and influence. I have seen an estimate somewhere that there are some 20,000 such patterns and the number continues to grow as players experiment. Practically speaking, a player who can play in a hundred or so would be well on the way to mastering the game.

Fuseki is about how the four corners (and the rest of the board as well) relate to each other. One can think of this as the first 5 to 10 moves. During this time the fuseki chosen will be the major determining factor in which joseki are played and how the other big points on the board are taken. Fuseki is how a player announces the overall approach he or she will take in the conflicts between territory and influence.

One learns Go in this same order, up the pyramid from tactics to the finer points of strategy. To a degree, this is the only way. Until you can keep a group alive or mount a successful attack, no amount of opening game savvy will make you a winner. Traditionally, students are discouraged from much study of joseki and fuseki until they are nearing the shodan rank. Personally, I think this is too late. Not understanding something of the elements of opening strategy severely limits what one can do in the game. So while deep study may not always be beneficial, a good basic grasp reaps many rewards.

This book, part of a series from the Nihon Ki-in (the Japanese Go Association) is one of the best books on fuseki and how strategy drives the overall game. Thirteen chapters organize the 29 most important opening patterns, spending a good amount of time showing how various joseki can be used to take best advantage of the positions. The language is simple and crystal clear, which is a great achievement in a subject area most players consider esoteric.

I'm not going to pretend that this material is exciting reading, but this presentation is quite painless, and well suited for occasional reading or research. As such it's value will survive long past the best puzzle book. The book is well organized for these purposes and includes a good glossary as well as subject, player and game indexes. All of this makes the book an excellent value.

The Gambia: The Bradt Travel Guide
Published in Paperback by Bradt Travel Guides (January, 2002)
Authors: Craig Emms and Linda Barnett
Average review score:

A Sensitive View of a Fascinating Place
This is the most carefully and accurately written travel guide, and thus the most useful, that I have encountered in nearly four decades of traveling. It is also the most sensitive statement of The Gambia and its people I could imagine. I have been visiting the country since the mid-1970s, and was just there in early 2003. I found out that Emms and Barnett are respected wildlife experts who have taken up residence in The Gambia who advise the Gambian government, when it will listen, on matters pertaining to wildlife, ecology, and conservation. They care about The Gambia and its people. What all of this means for travelers is that they have recently visited each restaurant, hotel, and museum (and bar) they write about, driven each road, bartered for each item purchased. For every place I visited, over two months, their advice was on the money. And I would purchase the book even if not traveling, because it gives a wonderfully accurate sense of Gambian history and culture. My hat is off to Emms, Barnett, and the Bradt folks for giving us this book. Don't leave home (for The Gambia) without it.
